The Local Artist
King Duran, a 28-year-old artist from Pakil, Laguna, proudly identifies as a member of the LGBTQ community. His artwork predominantly explores themes of women, rural life, everyday experiences, and Filipino culture and traditions.
Working primarily with oil and acrylic paints, he incorporates a variety of techniques and textures into his creations. One of his distinctive methods includes etching, where he uses a ballpoint pen and other tools to carefully etch details, particularly the long hair of his female subjects.
About the Artwork
In a quiet town in the Philippines, where stories are passed down like heirlooms, a local artist named King Duran painted a piece entitled "Ina at Anak" (Mother and Child), which embodies Filipino values of nationalism and family.
It captures a moment of tenderness— a mother cradling her child beneath the shade of a mango tree, living a simple life in a rice field, surrounded by nature and a traditional bahay kubo. Despite simplicity, the painting conveys richness in love, gratitude, and peace, highlighting the beauty of appreciating life’s simple joys. It carries the essence of Filipino love and resilience — a mother’s quiet strength, a child’s trusting embrace. This painting isn’t just art; it’s a memory, a culture, and a feeling—translated into something that can wrap you in the very warmth it portrays.
